How to Clean and Store Christmas Decorations Properly

Assortment of Christmas ornaments and holiday decorations

Every January, North Houston families face the same question: throw decorations in a box and shove them in the attic, or take the time to clean and store them properly. The Texas climate makes this decision consequential. Attic temperatures swing from 40 degrees in winter to 150 degrees in summer, and humidity levels fluctuate wildly. Decorations stored carelessly in these conditions deteriorate, mold, crack, and become unusable within a few years. This guide shows you how to protect your investment.

Why Storage Matters More in Texas

A North Houston attic experiences some of the most extreme storage conditions in the country. Summer temperatures routinely hit 140 to 150 degrees, while humidity levels fluctuate from bone-dry to saturated depending on the season and weather. Christmas decorations stored in these conditions face accelerated deterioration compared to homes in moderate climates.

Plastic ornaments warp. Glass ornaments can crack from thermal stress. Fabric decorations develop mildew. Light strings corrode at connection points. Artificial tree branches lose their shape permanently. The good news is that proper cleaning and storage techniques prevent all of this.

Cleaning Decorations Before Storage

Ornaments

  • Dust all ornaments with a soft, dry cloth before packing
  • Clean glass ornaments with a damp microfiber cloth — never submerge them
  • Wipe plastic and metal ornaments with a vinegar-water solution to prevent mildew
  • Repair any chipped or peeling finishes now — damage worsens in storage

Light Strings

  • Test every string before storing — replace any that flicker or have damaged sockets
  • Wipe dust and sap off the wires with a damp cloth
  • Wrap each string around a piece of cardboard or a dedicated light reel to prevent tangling
  • Label each wrapped set with its length and location so setup is faster next year

Artificial Trees and Wreaths

  • Vacuum or shake out loose needles and dust
  • Spot clean any stains with a damp cloth
  • Store in a tree storage bag — not the original box, which deteriorates in humidity
  • Fluff branches into shape before bagging — they compress less when stored fully shaped

Storage Solutions for Texas Climate

  • Use airtight plastic bins — not cardboard boxes, which absorb humidity and attract pests
  • Place silica gel packets in each bin to absorb moisture
  • Store bins in climate-controlled spaces when possible — a closet or interior storage room is better than an attic
  • If attic storage is your only option, position bins on shelving rather than directly on the attic floor
  • Wrap fragile ornaments individually in acid-free tissue paper, not newspaper — ink transfers in humidity

Post-Holiday House Cleaning

After decorations come down, your home needs attention. Pine needles hide in carpet fibers for weeks, candle wax drips harden on mantles and tables, and glitter from ornaments appears in surprising places through February. A thorough post-holiday deep clean — vacuuming carpets, wiping all surfaces, and cleaning windows where candles sat — gives your home a fresh start for the new year.
