How to Remove Grease Stains from Kitchen Cabinets Fast

Boiling water in a pot on a kitchen burner with steam rising

Kitchen cabinet grease is one of the most stubborn cleaning challenges in any home. Cooking produces airborne grease particles that settle on cabinet surfaces, and over time this invisible film builds into a sticky, discolored layer. The cabinets closest to the stove get the worst of it. North Houston kitchens, where frying, roasting, and grilling happen year-round, develop grease buildup faster than homes in cooler climates. This guide covers five proven methods for removing cabinet grease, from light film to heavy buildup, along with preventive measures that keep your cabinets clean between deep sessions.

Why Kitchen Cabinets Get So Greasy

Every time you cook on the stovetop, microscopic grease droplets become airborne and settle on nearby surfaces. Your range hood captures some of this grease, but even the best ventilation systems only remove about 50 to 70 percent of airborne cooking particles. The rest settles on cabinets, walls, and countertops.

Over weeks and months, this invisible film accumulates layer by layer. It attracts dust particles that stick to the greasy surface, creating a gritty, discolored coating. Cabinets directly above and beside the stove are always the worst affected, but grease can travel surprisingly far — even cabinets across the kitchen show buildup over time.

Five Methods for Removing Cabinet Grease

Method 1: Dish Soap and Warm Water (Light Buildup)

For cabinets with light grease film — a few weeks of buildup — warm water with a tablespoon of dish soap and a microfiber cloth is often sufficient. Wipe in the direction of the wood grain, rinse the cloth frequently, and dry immediately to prevent water damage to the finish.

Method 2: Baking Soda Paste (Moderate Buildup)

Mix two tablespoons of baking soda with one tablespoon of water to form a paste. Apply to greasy spots with a soft cloth and rub gently. The mild abrasion of baking soda cuts through grease without scratching most cabinet finishes. Rinse with a damp cloth and dry.

Method 3: Vinegar and Water Spray (Moderate to Heavy)

Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. Spray onto the greasy surface, let it sit for 2 minutes, then wipe with a microfiber cloth. Vinegar dissolves the fat molecules in grease, making them easy to wipe away. Do not use on waxed cabinets — vinegar strips wax finishes.

Method 4: Vegetable Oil and Baking Soda (Heavy Buildup)

This counterintuitive method uses oil to dissolve oil. Mix one part vegetable oil with two parts baking soda to form a gritty paste. Apply to heavy grease buildup, rub in circular motions, and wipe clean. The vegetable oil dissolves the polymerized cooking grease while the baking soda provides scrubbing action.

Method 5: Commercial Degreaser (Severe Buildup)

For cabinets that have not been cleaned in a year or more, a commercial kitchen degreaser may be necessary. Choose a product rated safe for painted or stained surfaces. Apply according to the label directions, let it dwell, and wipe clean. Follow with a damp cloth to remove any chemical residue.

Preventing Grease Buildup

  • Run the range hood fan every time you cook, starting before you turn on the burner.
  • Wipe down cabinets near the stove with a damp cloth weekly.
  • Clean range hood filters monthly — clogged filters reduce ventilation effectiveness.
  • Apply a thin coat of furniture wax to clean cabinets to create a barrier that makes future grease easier to remove.
